Dear Friends,

As expected, CO Gabby Wolf has been arrested yesterday. He was this time

sentenced for 28 days of imprisonment and has arrived at about midnight
yesterday to the Military Prison No. 4 in Tzrifin. He is due to be
released
on 10 May.

Gabby Wolf is now held in the Medical Isolation Ward of the prison. No,
he
is not ill. He is in fact in perfectly good health.

We know relatively little about the Medical Isolation Ward. To the best
of
our knowledge, the great majority of prisoners staying in that ward are
prisoners who try to receive an exemption from military service on
psychiatric grounds (a very popular method of avoiding military service
in
Israel, as in many other countries). There they are being supervised by
doctors, and many try to play mad.

The conditions of imprisonment in this ward are known to be
exceptionally
good. Prisoners can walk around freely in the rather large area of the
ward
and talk freely to each other. Military discipline there is known to be
exceptionally lenient.

My guess is that placing Gabby in that ward is the prison authorities'
way
of avoiding confrontation.  As you recall, last time he was sent to  the

Isolation Ward because he refused to have a haircut. By placing him in
Medical Isolation, the prison authorities can spare the trouble of
sending
him to the barber again, without breaking prison regulations (after all,
if
they would keep him in an ordinary ward without cutting his hair, other
prisoners could have been inspired to do like Gabby and refuse to
co-operate
on matters of military discipline).

Please continue to send appeals. As you saw, they are very helpful. This

time, I think the focus of the appeals should be the more principal
issue of
keeping COs behind bars. These appeals should, I think, be addressed to
the
more senior authorities in Israel, although a copy sent to the prison is

still a very helpful thing. Also, sending postcards to Gabby himself in
prison would be very encouraging indeed. The usual address list is
